Worldwide Living
Conditions Have To Improve!
Living Conditions on Planet Earth
· The
human population of Earth reached 1 billion in 1804, 2 billion in 1927, 3
billion in 1959, 4 billion in 1974 and 5 billion in late 1986. On October 12th
1999, the human population of Earth reached 6 billion.
· The
United States is a part of the developed or industrialized world, which consists
of about 50 countries with a combined population of only 1 billion, less than
one sixth of the world’s population. In contrast, approximately 5.5 billion
people live in the developing world. In the developing world, more than 1.2
billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less
than $1 per day
· One
billion, or over 17% of all men, women, and children or, more than four times
the population of the United States and Canada combined, do not have safe water
to drink. It is expected that nearly thirty five percent of the world’s
population will be facing water scarcity in less than 20 years.
· 500
million humans are homeless or poorly housed worldwide.
· Sub-standard
housing, unsafe water and poor sanitation in densely populated cities are
responsible for 10 million deaths worldwide annually, and are a major factor in
preventable environmental hazards, which are responsible for * * 25 percent of
all premature deaths worldwide.
· Waterborne
diseases alone kill 4 million infants and children annually.
· 600
million people live in life and health threatening homes in Asia, Africa, and
Latin America.
· Over
3 billion people worldwide lack proper sanitation facilities.
· Every
third child is born into a life of poverty.
"Destruction of water resources and of forest
catchments and aquifers is a form of terrorism. Denying poor people access to
water by privatizing water distribution or polluting wells and rivers is also
terrorism. In the ecological context of water wars, terrorists are not just
those hiding in the caves of Afghanistan. "
Vandana Shiva
International borders are imaginary lines drawn by people with imaginary
power that separate the imaginary rights of one people from the imaginary rights
of another people.
